AeroPress Coffee Brewing Method

AeroPress Coffee Brewing Method

The AeroPress is a revolutionary coffee brewing device invented by Alan Adler in 2005. It combines elements of French press and espresso methods, creating a unique brewing experience that results in smooth, rich coffee without bitterness.

What is AeroPress?

AeroPress is a manual coffee brewing device that uses air pressure to extract coffee. It consists of a cylindrical chamber and a plunger with an airtight seal. Ground coffee and hot water steep together, and then gentle pressure is applied to push the coffee through a microfilter.

The method is known for producing a clean, full-bodied cup that's somewhere between espresso and drip coffee in character, but without the bitterness or sediment.

Equipment Needed

To brew with AeroPress, you'll need:

  • AeroPress (original or Go model)
  • AeroPress filters (paper or metal reusable filter)
  • AeroPress scoop and stirrer (usually included)
  • Digital scale (for accurate measurements)
  • Gooseneck kettle or any kettle with temperature control
  • Freshly ground coffee
  • Mug or carafe (to collect the coffee)

Brewing Technique - Inverted Method

The inverted method is popular among AeroPress enthusiasts as it allows more control and prevents premature dripping.

1. Grind Size

Use a fine grind, similar to table salt or slightly finer. AeroPress is forgiving, but finer grind works better with the shorter brew time.

2. Coffee to Water Ratio

Start with a 1:12 to 1:15 ratio (e.g., 17g coffee to 200-250ml water). Many recipes use 17g coffee to 200ml water as a starting point.

3. Water Temperature

Use water between 175-195°F (80-90°C). AeroPress works well with slightly lower temperatures than drip methods, which helps avoid bitterness.

4. The Inverted Brewing Process

Step 1 - Setup: Insert the plunger about 1cm into the chamber. Flip the AeroPress upside down so it sits on the plunger.

Step 2 - Add Coffee: Place the AeroPress on your scale and add your ground coffee.

Step 3 - Bloom: Pour double the coffee weight in hot water (e.g., 34g water for 17g coffee). Stir gently for 10 seconds to ensure all grounds are saturated.

Step 4 - Main Pour: Add the remaining water, filling to your target weight. Stir again gently.

Step 5 - Steep: Let it steep for 1-2 minutes (30-60 seconds for lighter roasts, up to 2 minutes for darker roasts).

Step 6 - Press: Wet the filter and screw on the filter cap. Flip the AeroPress onto your mug. Press steadily and evenly for 20-30 seconds. Stop pressing when you hear a hissing sound.

Classic Method (Standard)

The original method uses the AeroPress in its normal orientation:

  1. Place filter in cap and attach to chamber
  2. Place chamber on top of your mug
  3. Add coffee grounds
  4. Pour hot water up to number 4 (approximately 200ml)
  5. Stir for 10 seconds
  6. Insert plunger and press gently for 20-30 seconds

Advantages of AeroPress

  • Quick: Complete brew in 1-2 minutes
  • Portable: Lightweight and compact, perfect for travel
  • Versatile: Can produce espresso-like concentrate or regular coffee
  • Clean: Paper filter removes oils and sediments
  • Consistent: Easy to replicate once you find your preferred recipe
  • Forgiving: Works well across different grind sizes and temperatures
  • Affordable: Relatively inexpensive compared to other brewing methods

Popular Recipes

  • Classic Recipe: 17g coffee, 200ml water at 85°C, 1 minute steep, 30-second press
  • Light Roast: 17g coffee, 200ml water at 90°C, 45-second steep, 20-second press
  • Espresso-style: 20g coffee, 100ml water, steep 30 seconds, press 30 seconds (makes concentrate)

Tips for Better AeroPress Coffee

  1. Experiment with grind size - AeroPress is very forgiving
  2. Use water just off the boil (around 80-90°C) for best results
  3. Try the inverted method for more control
  4. Press slowly and steadily - rushing can create channeling
  5. Stop pressing when you hear the hiss to avoid bitterness
  6. Try different steep times based on your coffee's roast level
  7. Consider a metal filter for more body and oils
  8. Use fresh, quality beans ground just before brewing

The AeroPress is an excellent choice for beginners and experts alike, offering versatility, consistency, and convenience in one compact package.
